What churches have split and what was the reason.

Mormons split because of polygamy? Can you tell me any other splits? Just curious...

  • Mormons did not split bc of polygamy. They have a separate set of holy texts (The Book of Mormon) that are not recognized by Catholics and Protestants. That is why they split. The Mormon faith in the new prophecies discovered by Joseph Smith is the reason for the split. Official members of the LDS church do not practice polygamy.

  • Actually, the LDS church split into a few different denominations because some people did not believe in the new LDS prophet chosen. They thought it should be someone other than the person chosen. Some people have left the LDS church because they want polygamy and LDS do not, but polygamy is not the only reason. I have no idea what ecodani is talking about, maybe she doesnt realize there are different sects of LDS

The Catholic church has also split. And baptists have different types - such as independent and fundamental - so I would assume they have split too.

  • I've known local churches that have split over stupid things like the color of the carpet in the new church or where the main door would be. The Church of Christ split over instruments in the church but have since been working on reconciling this.

  • baconbits, what instruments of the church do you mean? not to spark an argument, i just have never heard that phrase, and i wondered what it meant. do you mean doctrine, or physical things? i heard that there was a split over doctrine, but i don't know very much about the history of church of christ.

  • AngryBob she probably means actual musical instruments. the CoC originally split off b/c it believed the Bible never gave churches permission to use instruments to praise God. but most of the CoC churches are now admitting that it is their preference not to have instrumental music.

when i was younger i remember the church we went to split over the women having a softball league...well thats what started the split...it didnt end well! the church we went to while i was in high school eventually (after we left) split over whether a woman could be the deaf interpretor or if she was leading the church...stupid again i know!

  • Angrybob I was talking about whether it was ok to play musical instruments in the church or not. Many felt that were the Bible was silent so should we be. Those that do not want them qoute New Testament and those that want to keep them qoute that they used them in the Old Testament to worship and Christ did not abolish the Old Testament. I would say it's still 50/50 but the two churches are talking and realizing that it's not the music that saves someone but rather their belief in Christ.
