US plans 'dramatic reductions' in nuclear weapons

US President Barack Obama is planning "dramatic reductions" in the country's nuclear arsenal, a senior US administration official has said.

This would come as part of a sweeping policy review designed to prevent the spread of atomic weapons, he said.

He added that the new strategy will point to a greater role for conventional weapons.

Mr Obama was holding a meeting with his Defence Secretary Robert Gates to discuss the new nuclear strategy.

The review "will point to dramatic reductions in the stockpile, while maintaining a strong and reliable deterrent through the investments that have been made in the budget," the official said.

  • I never understood why we were allowed to have nuclear weapons but if any other country had them or was trying to get them we made such a big deal about it, seems hypocritical. Especially since we have started wars and invaded other countries recently.

  • Other countries are piling up nuclear weapons so should we disarm and be weak sitting ducks?

  • You mean like dis-arming American citizens from our personal weapons? I sure hope not. I am sure some will try... but some of us are secure in our RIGHT to bare arms.

  • Um....we were "weak sitting ducks" on 9-11, despite our arsenal of weapons.

Oh right. That was a false flag, so that explains it.

  • It is hard to reason with a 9/11 truther.I just want to say this the PA has been helpful in stopping some terrorist plans since 9/11.Terrorists do exist and they do hate us just like they hate Israel. We see their attacks abroad pretty much daily.

You are right. It is extremely hypocritical. And we sure have started wars and invaded other countries, not only recently but historically.

  • "Those that despise the American military for simply existing are the ones that need them the most."

  • The rules they want to impose are what will disarm Americans. Not to the degree they want but it will make it harder and there will be more red tape. Baby steps........
