Pentagon shooter had a history of mental illness

HOLLISTER, Calif. – The man who opened fire in front of the Pentagon had a history of mental illness and had become so erratic that his parents reached out to local authorities weeks ago with a warning that he was unstable and might have a gun, authorities said Friday.

  • There are so many people out there who are mentally ill and unstable. In the 50's we locked them up in institutions. In the 60's we let them all go because it was inhumane. Now we have a problem because so many people who need medications don't take them. I think we need to go to a system where people who prove they can stay on their meds can live at home. Others who go on and off must be in a group home where they can be supervised. It's not fair to anyone to just ignore the situation and then when something goes wrong just hang ours heads and say "oh well, they were mentally ill"

  • Almost all these guys that do something like this have mental illness. It does not take much to set them off.

  • It appears that warning that warning the local authorities didn't help much.

We need to find a different way to deal with mentally ill adults. Too many end up homeless and go without treatment and help. Yet it seems wrong to lock them up in institutes and jails like many countries do.
