Have you ever had to have a swollen lymph node drained on your child! WE DID!

This has been one wild week. Last Tuesday my son who is 6 years old developed a small swollen lymph node, no other symptoms. Then during the night his fever got up to 102.8. His lymph node had grown to about the size of a baseball (no lie)
I took him to the pediatrician first thing!!!! The Dr was shocked by the size and sudden onset. And sent us to the hospital. He was hooked up to IV antibiotics and the next morning it was MUCH smaller. We had a CT scan which told us it was just a lymph node with infection. But for the next 4 days it did not improve any more. Even with a 2nd antibiotic added.
In fact he got worse, lump got bigger, temp went back up. So, Dr suggested surgery on Sunday! He had to be put to sleep, breathing tube and everything. They had to cut an abscess out and lots of puss. He left a drain in my sons neck to get rid of any more puss that needed to come out.

  • CONT: We are home now, the tube is still in his neck and the DR'S have NO IDEA where this infection came from. All the tests were negative!!!

Have you ever heard of this, have you had to deal with this?

  • Sorry you're son had to go through all of that. We've never been through it. Are your doctors going to do a culture on the fluid they drained? Was it glandular fever he had?
