Obama wants to change poverty scale

Right now our government bases the poverty level on how much you can buy but Obama want to change it to how much you can buy compared to your neighbors(the area where you live)
For example... people who live in NY could be making 100,000 and still be considered living under the poverty level depending on where they live. This would entitle them to the same things someone making $20,000 would get.
Is this a good idea? What is the downside of this?

  • Wont this cost the government more money? Wouldn't it mean more people can get government assistance? People who don't need it.

  • There already are different levels in different areas for household income requirements/thresholds for receiving PA. I don't see how this would change anything.

  • It actually makes sense to me.... The cost of living in places like New York, or the San Francisco Bay Area is much higher than say, in Alabama. And to say you can choose where you live is over simplifying things just a bit. What if you live close to family, so they can babysit for you? What if your job, your home, your family, EVERYTHING you know and love is somewhere? Why should you be forced to move to the middle of nowhere, where the cost of living might be lower, but you won't even know if you can find a job?

  • I think he should be more worried about ending the war than worrying about comparing people with their neighbors.

  • The more they get people on the dole the more they can control.

  • No I do not agree with this at all! Before someone making $100,000 a year, is able to recieve government assistance, they should have to move to a different area where they can afford living on that amount. If you make $100,000 a year where I'm from, you are RICH! You could have a mansion for a house, 10 cars, etc. $100,000 a year is a lot of money in most places. Why should that person be able to get put on government assistance so they can stay in their upscale neighborhood, that they can't afford?

  • I cannot wait until this guy is out of the office of the Presidency.Everything he wants to do and tries to do is a complete screw up.How much more money will he spend and waste on his stupid ideas? People complained about our last President spending too much and yet this president has already way out done the last!
