Salt Ban?!!! What do you think of this proposed legislation?

Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129, states in part. The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

"The consumer needs to make their own health choices. Just as doctors and the occasional visit to a hospital can't truly control how a person chooses to maintain their health, neither can chefs nor the occasional visit to a restaurant," said Jeff Nathan, the executive chef and co-owner of Abigael's on Broadway.

  • Absurd is right. Things like this anger me so much. These ding dongs who are so sure America could never go the way of Castro or even Europe need to open their eyes and look at what is staring them in the face.

  • Completely ridiculous. It's not the responsibility of restaurants to make sure people are healthy.

  • to limit the salt would be more appropriate.

banning it outright would not be possible.

  • Basically, you couldn't salt your fries, chips, or put salt on your Margarita glass. You could not offer ketchup, or most condiments for that matter, because they have salt in them.

A bakery could not use salt in baking. Yet salt is in every bread recipe, cookie recipe, or just about anything you bake.

    This is just crazy!

  • Guess bacon is banned in that city.  No eggs and bacon, no BLT sandwiches, no filet mignon wrapped in bacon.  Yum, I'm getting hungry thinking about BACON....   LOL

  • Wow, do they actually think before writing these things out? Or do they just have a big "Wheel of Misfortune" with all these stupid ideas on it?

  • Don't these legislators have anything better to do?? We don't have enough laws already (though I'm not a resident of NY)? Has this man ever taken a nutrition course to realize the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY of salt in the diet? Despite popular media stories, salt is not the villan. Placing the responsibility for the health of the individual on others is utterly ridiculous! OK, guess I'm done ranting. :-)
