  • I think there are ages recommended on the baby food jars. We started stage 2 a couple weeks after stage 1 - there's not a whole lot of difference in texture, it's more the combinations. We never did the meat baby food, it smells just awful! My son was on table food by 8 months, so we just tore off really small pieces of whatever we were having (chicken, turkey, etc) for him.

  • THey have milestones they suggest your child meeting before starting each food, Stage 2 I believe is " Sitter" Not supported sitter just solo.
My daughter is 10 months old and doesn't eat baby food anymore. She eats oatmeal, lots of fruits and veggies, pasta and chicken with us.
She stil has her formula bottles but she refuses baby food.
You can find the milestones on

  • You never have to give jarred food (overpriced water and mush) or meat (ewww). Gerber is just a marketing ploy. Rice cereal is constipiating and frankly paste tastes better. If you let the baby guide you, you can just go direct to table food. Food before one is just for fun, not nutrition. So let the baby explore real regular food. No fuss. Baby should be able to sit unassisted, have good hand control -- a development that is around six months old or so.  go here:    and here

  • We never fed our daughter meat or jarred foods. Just mash up whatever you are eating. Be sure to avoid the allergy trigger foods. This is not a complete list: before age 1, no soy, dairy, wheat, citrus, egg white, strawberries; before age 2 no honey, chocolate, nuts.
Two great books /websites on feeding babies, with differing philosophies, Baby Led Weaning and Super Baby Food You should be able to find them at your local library
