another post got me thinking

the imbilicol cord on the babys belly button when they are born what is the purpose of that? I mean I know that is how they eat and stuff but why do they tell you to let it fall off on its own?

  • Because, it was connected to a very large blood supply. If that doesn't heal from the "inside - out", there is infection or the newborns could bleed to death. Many babies have died from blood poisoning because the "cord" was pulled off instead of falling off.

  • because it has to heal under the cord connecting to the stomach. if you take it off to soon it will be a hole.

  • its like a scab - if you pull it off before its done healing it could get infected.
