Hamburger prices

Trying to be as frugal as possible. I'm just wondering (in general-since location, etc will vary prices) what the "typical" price per pound of ground beef is-and a "good" sale price is.

  • I look for ground beef on sale for under $2.00/lb. The closer I can get to $1.50, the happier I am.

  • The last time I bought it at the local slaughterhouse it was $2.29 a lb. I have been buying ground turkey for $1.29/lb. and using that instead of ground beef.

  • Shop early in the morning and get the newly marked down meat. It's still good and the price is almost like giving it away

  • At a high-end grocery store, a good sale price is $1.99/lb for 93% lean - I've never seen it cheaper. For 80% lean, $1.69 is good. BUT, we slaughter our own steer every year or two, and our best price was last year, we bought an organic steer for $1/lb (the farmer is a friend, but it was a county fair grand champion, so we got lucky), and paid 86cents/lb for processing - yes we paid $1.86/lb for hamburger, but we paid the same price for roasts & steaks too, so it was worth it. It's the cheapest way for us to buy beef, period - and pork.
