Getting baby to burp

Hi Ladies. I have a 7 day old baby that I am breastfeeding and I am having the hardest time getting him to burp after feedings. I try for a good 5-10 minutes before I give up. Should I keep trying until I get a burp out or do BF babies not burp as much? My niece who is bottlefed always burps after each feeding and pretty easily. Any advice to get him to burp??

  • I found the most successful way to burp my boys was to lie them across my lap, tummy down, supporting their head of course, and rub and pat their back, working from their lower back up, this has been almost fail proof for me =)

  • Breastfed babies actually do not burp as much because there is no air in your breasts like there can be in bottles.

If the baby doesn't get fussy over gas, then don't try too hard.

  • I don't think BF babies burp as much either. With my breastfed baby I would give up after a few minutes.

  • Yeah breast fed babies don't burp as much. There's no air in your boob like there is in a bottle lol. My daughter didn't burp much. My son on the other hand burped and spit up an awful lot. All babies are different. If you're trying and she's just not burping, then I wouldn't worry about it, unless she spits up a LOT.

  • my babies weren't really burpers either...4 all breastfed.
i had one spitter upper...i think he may have over fed himself upon occasion, but am not really sure :)
    anyhow, i wouldn't sweat it.

  • I also agree that breastfeed babies just don't really burp, though I would suggest that you try for at least a coupe mins to possible help reduce spit up. GL
