Can anybody suggest a flexable schedule for an almost two year old?

I have always been a pretty laid back Mom and have never really had my son on a schedule. This hasn't been a problem until the last few months when his meals are more like all day snacking and going to bed at 10:30 is an early night for him. What is a good rough schedule for meals and naps? Also, how do I get him on it?

  • I dont have set schedules for my 20 month old's meals....she eats when we eat and then snacks other times too. She does go to bed at 8pm every night. Maybe a little later if she took a late nap, but there have been plenty of times she goes to bed at 7:30pm because she is so tired. She wakes up on her own between 7:30am and 8:30am. Sometimes a little earlier or a little later. if it is after 9am though, I generally worry she is getting sick or teething. She use to nap later in the day but lately she has been taking two naps a day. one about 3 hours after she gets up and then the next around 3pm....sometimes earlier....just depends on when she gets tired. She gets hungry for dinner around 5/6pm...which works for us when we have dinner.

I would ease him into a schedule. Maybe make him go to bed 15 minutes earlier every night or every week. until its at a time that you want. Good luck!

  • My son is 23 months. This has been his schedule since he was 15 months old (because that's when he dropped his second nap):

    7:15 - wakes up
7:30 - small snack (2 strawberries or 2 slices of apple)
8:00 - breakfast (scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, pear slices, wheat bread)
    11:00 - lunch
    12:00 - nap
    2:20 - wakes up
    3:00 - snack
    4:45 - supper
    7:00 - bath
    7:30 - books
    8:00 - bed

  • Set up a schedule, then gradually ease him into it. Try to feed him at set times, rather than just whenever. His tummy will eventually learn to be hungry at those particular times. Try to give him clues as to what is coming. For example, when he wakes up, say, "Ok, we are going to vhange your diaper, then eat breakfast"...or in toddler language, "Diaper then breakfast". When it's time for nap, you can say, "Clean up, then diaper, then nap". He will learn what comes next, which will make it easier to put him a routine.

  • Here's my DD's schedule:

    730- wake up
800-breakfast (fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese, milk)
    900-1130- learning, crafts,
    1200-lunch (sandwich, chips, fruit, water)
    100-300-nap
330- snack (fruit snacks or goldfish and water)
    500-600 dinner
730-800 bath books and in bed by 900

My DD is almost 4 so I don't put her to bed at 730-800 anymore.

  • switching schedules at this age is fairly easy just gradually reduce bedtime and stick to the new time! My kids are on a awesome schedule but with my first we were on a schedule like you are now! But now we have 3 and the youngest will be 2 tomorrow. We have an eary schedule because of the older kids school schedule and my school schedule.

  • Our "schedule" is like this:

    anywhere between 8:30 - 10:30am - Wake up (9am is average)

    breakfast immediately on wake up

play play play, maybe run out and do a few errands. Snack is whatever I've got shoved into my bag.

when we get home, lunch (anywhere from 12 to 3pm)

nap anywhere from 1:30 to 3pm for at least 2 hours, but sometimes 3 hours. Sometimes I have to go wake the kid up or he'll be up all night!

when we get up from nap, sometimes we go somewhere if his daddy wants to go out, sometimes not. We usually take a walk to the mailbox in the afternoon.

dinner's at 6:30 or 7pm, followed by bath and bedtime between 7:30 and 8pm.

I keep it pretty loose, but there are touchpoints during the day that don't fluctuate much.
