How long before I let my son sleep after hitting his head?

My 10yr old son hit his head and has a knot on the back of his ear. It hurts to the touch. I out ice on it for awhile and now he is sleepy. Is it okay to let him sleep or should I take him to the emergency room?

  • Are his pupils equal and reactive? Is he zoning out beyond how he normally acts when he's tired? Is he lethargic or acting okay? Has he vomited? If yes to any of those, head for the ER. If no to all of them...I'd at least call and ask what they think.

  • Whoops - let me rephrase that. If his pupils are equal & reactive, that's a good thing. Zoning, lethargy, vomiting, are the bad signs. I'm a caller though, I call the hospital if I question anything.
