gala attire

my darling bf attends alot of fundraisers, galas, balls, ect... i am now being expected to join in but am not sure how to dress... so, it's a formal fundraiser pre fundraiser event in which there will be a live auction and dinner at a very fancy private home...the invitation says gala and i guess everyone else just "knows" what to wear, but i want to do it right and am very nervous i will wear something to short or not formal enough or too buisness-y or too formal. HELP :))

  • Is he wearing a suit or a tux? Honestly, knowing that can help steer you in the right direction :-)

  • If he's wearing a suit, then you should be able to go with very dressy cocktail dress, that sexy black evening dress sort of thing. Not too short and slinky and not floor length or anything like that. Certainly nothing "Cinderella like", unless he's wearing a tux, and even then, I would be careful with that ;-)

Possibly something with spaghetti straps, that sort of thing.

Is there anyone else that you know that's going that has gone before, so you could maybe ask them what they wore last yr, so you can go from there? Or, is there any pictures of the event that you can see? If not, then, depending on how well you know the hosts or any of the committee members for the fundraiser, you could casually ask one of the women there what they were planning on wearing. That can give you a bit of a clue as to how dressy they mean by "gala".
