  • Keep in mind that solids fed to babies before they turn 1 are for the experience of eating them, not for nutrition (a subject most doctors know nothing about). Nutritionists recommend starting solids at 6 months; many are now recommending skipping cereal and starting with a bit of avocado mashed with breast milk (or formula). Then baked sweet potato, oatmeal, pumpkin, pureed peas, etc. Jarred baby food tastes awful, is expensive, and you never really know what is in it. Be sure to avoid the allergy trigger foods. This is not a complete list: before age 1, no soy, dairy, wheat, citrus, egg white, strawberries; before age 2 no honey, chocolate, nuts. Two fantastic books on feeding babies, with slightly differing philosophies are Baby Led Weaning and Super Baby Food. Check them out of the library. Both websites have great information:

  • With both kids they were 4 months old and I started with plain rice cereal. At six months they got bananas and avocado and other mild foods. Slowly I start introducing new flavors.
Right now my DD is 7months old and LOVES sweet potatoes.

  • My daughter was six months old and she got baked sweet potato as her first solid meal. Next were bananas, then green beans.

  • 6 months- carrots, then practically anything we could find to mash or puree, or that was already pureed (since I work and DH didn't want to puree it all, we had to get jarred foods- way more expensive in the long run). We held off on meat until she had teeth. Rice cereal constipated her so we did oatmeal then mixed grain. No dairy until after a year.

  • 6 months. Fresh mashed banana. She's 9m/o now and at day care eats whatever jarred food I send (1 fruit, 1 veggie a day) and at dinner she gets a little of whatever I make for us mashed up or cut into bit sized pieces.

  • I started with rice cereal at 4 months. Then at around 6 months we started with fruits, then went to the vegetables. Remember when you start a new food feed the same one for 3 days to make sure there are no allergies to it.
