When do children stop taking naps?

My son who has been 4 for 3 days now, refuses to take a nap, or even lay down and watch movies for "quiet time" is this a phase or is he really over nap time? He says he is not tired.I think he needs a nap because without one by 4pm he starts acting up really bad! What do you think?

  • My oldest stopped @ 5 and my yonugest @ 4.

The way I knew they were ready, was also by watching them @ bedtime. If they had taken a nap that day, and now did not seem tired at night, then naptime was out off the question :-) That was how I determined it w/ the oldest.

The younger just didn't wan't to take naps anymore. For a couple of weeks he might get a bit whiny late in the afternoon it soon wore off, though.

    Good Luck :-)

  • Depends on the kid. My oldest stopped around 2.5. My middle and youngest are still taking naps. I think they all go through a phase when they don't want a nap anymore. With my oldest I said fine and he no longer took one. I wish I had kept trying to have him take one though. At about three my middle child refused and I kept putting him down for a nap. He actually takes a nap about half the time, but he always lays quietly in his room. I don't care if he plays as long as he stays in his bed and doesn't wake up his little brother.
My brother's five year old still takes a nap everyday. My sister's step kids took naps until they were six. So it depends on the kid and the persistence of the parents.

  • Depends on the kid, but both mine were between 2-3 years old when they stopped and only do it when we have been really busy that day.

  • Depends on the kid.
My oldest stopped taking naps after she turned 2. My son stopped shortly after turning 4. My middle daughter was still taking several naps a week at 5 1/2 but stopped when she started kindergarten (full day). My youngest only takes the occasional nap since she turned 3 1/2 (she'll be 4 in a couple weeks).
