  • First realize that the average age of potty training is 4. After that you will realize that while you may be ready, he is not...Unless he is showing signs, it's best to wait. If he is showing signs...staying dry for 2-3 hours, letting you know when he is wet, telling you he needs to go...then get a potty chair, some shamwow for clean ups, underware (I'd skip pullups except at night or naptime) and lots of patience. Start by taking him to the potty when he gets up from naps and bed first. once he gets those down, then start during the day taking him to potty. keep in mind that accidents will be normal until about 4 years old. Good luck

  • Once my daughter knew what to do on the potty, we gave her a choice between underwear and a diaper. After telling her diapers are for babies, she always wanted underwear, but the deal was that she had to use the potty to get to wear undies. Take them every 20 minutes at first, then when they can hold it longer space it out. We didn't attempt to go diaper free out of the house until she actually started telling us she had to go. We just started at home..again, my girl was rewarded by getting to be naked or wear undies, you have to find the motivator for your child and take it slow so it doesn't become a power struggle.

  • This is the method we used with both of our daughters. The first was 19 months and the second was 17 months (with the 17 month old we eased into it a little more). It took more than 3 days, but not much longer. We were very pleased with the results.
