Could the final stages of weaning be related to night wakings?

I had been weaning my 20 month old for about 4 months and I had started the process by eliminating the night feedings first, then the day, and then the before-bed feedings. I finally ended it about a week ago with the early morning feeding. Now it seems for the past week my son has been waking up a few times a night REALLY upset and needing comfort to get back to bed. Is this a normal occurrence when the weaning finally ends?

  • As you know, the breast is for comfort as well as nutrition. He may be having night terrors, a growth spurt, or a major developmental change. We did child-led weaning, and my daughter gave up that last (bed time) feeding at 23 months.
