Should mistresses be punished? (legally)

Wife's $9M Message to Mistresses: 'Lay Off'
North Carolina 'Alienation of Affection' Law May Force Alleged Mistress to Pay Up
By ALICE GOMSTYN and LEE FERRAN

March 23, 2010 —

A North Carolina woman who won $9 million in a lawsuit against her husband's alleged mistress has a simple message for would-be homewreckers out there: "lay off."

"My main message is to all those women out there who might have their eyes on some guy that is married to not come between anybody," Cynthia Shackelford told "Good Morning America" today. "It's not good to go in there. It hurts the children. My children are devastated. I'm devastated.

"Allan [Shackelford's husband] and I joked about sitting in rocking chairs and having a glass of wine or whatever and talking about what our children did when they were little. That's never going to happen now."

  • I agree it is a two way street. However there are a lot of ruthless women out there who once they set their sights on something will and do whatever it takes to get it. Yes cheating spouses should be held accountable but people who KNOWINGLY cheat with a married person should ALSO be held accountable.
These days no matter what people just are not being held accountable for their actions, be it cheating, drinking and so on. Accountability has gone out the window.

  • If anyone should be punished legally, it should be the cheating spouse. Men (and women) who cheat are LIARS. Does anyone really think that they pick up women by saying "Yeah, I'm married, I just want to screw around"? They LIE. They say they're single/unhappy/their wives are _____.

There is no way of knowing what the mistress was told, or even if she knew his relationship status.

I never understood people being so pissed at the "other woman" (except when the other woman is a friend). Why? Why not be pissed at the CHEATER??

  • It's wrong to date a married man, but it does take two, you know. It's not like he didn't know what he was doing too.

  • I think if a woman KNOWS that she is messing with a married man then yes she should be punished. However, I hope her husband is made to pay her thensame amount as his mistress has to pay.
