For a little boy going through a hitting phase? He is 7 years old

  • Yes and no. I think it's quite normal, but it's still not acceptable. Try to extinguish the behavior before it gets bad. There's got to be a reason behind it and an alternative behavior that's more acceptable.

    Physical communication is the last resort of the unheard. He's trying to communicate something, and he's not getting through. Try to find out what he's saying before he hits someone again, and really listen.

    As in: don't tell him he's 'silly' or 'doesn't feel that way' or 'doesn't mean that'... listen to what he says and take him seriously. Even if his words are immature or inaccurate, you can only get to the truth by listening to what comes out first. Be big enough to listen without your ego taking over and telling you he can't possibly be angry or sad or hurt by that 'trivial' thing.

  • If you asked if it were normal for a two year old to go through a hitting phase, I would say yes. But by seven, he should understand by now and be able to control himself. Is he having trouble at school? Try having a meeting with the school counselor.
