  • there's no perfect age to start, but somewhere between 18 months and 2 years is a good time to at least introduce the potty. Buy her a potty and let her sit on it while you are in the bathroom. If she's not scared try putting her on it before or after bath time while she is naked. When you notice she's waking from naps dry, showing a lot of interest in what you do when you sit on the toilet, telling you when she's wet or dirty, able to pull her pants up and own, and appears to be unhappy when her diaper is wet/dirty then it's time to start actual potty training. She doesn't have to show all the signs, but the more signs she is showing the more likely she really is ready and will train more quickly. You want her to be ready so she can have some success. once she actually pees in the potty you can switch to panties or cloth training pants (Pull-ups are just diapers, and won't make her as uncomfortable when wet). GL!

  • Our first didn't show too many readiness signs, but we started cold-turkey to underwear at 19 months, and she did great. We were home-ridden for the first 3 days, by the 4th day we were confident enough to get out of the house with her in underwear as long as we took her to the potty often enough, and by about the 10th day she was able to tell us whenever she needed to go. We had some accidents occasionally for the next couple of months, but nothing too serious.

Our second (they're only 15 months apart), just started wanting to sit on the potty like her sister around 15 months. By 16 months we were putting her there more regularly and she started only pooping on the potty. We didn't switch to underwear until 17.5 months and even then we couldn't do it 100% of the time because she was out of our care 3 days a week. But she's still fully trained now at 18.5 months, even at night.

I'd introduce it now but no pressure.

  • Here's a link to a journal describing the method we used, more or less:
