Will this help the violence and threats dwindle?

WASHINGTON – Republicans took to the House floor Thursday to plead with those who oppose the Democratic health care overhaul to refrain from violence and threats.

Opposition to the health care bill that President Barack Obama signed into law Wednesday is "no excuse for bigotry, threats or acts of vandalism and I condemn such things in the strongest possible terms," said Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, the House's third-ranked Republican.

"Some of our colleagues have received threatening phone calls. A brick has been thrown, a window has been smashed. This is not the right way to respond," added Rep. Joseph Pitts, R-Pa., a leading anti-abortion lawmaker.

  • No, this won't make any difference, they don't listen to anything they have to say, if anything it will get worse.

  • Wishful thinking. The people making threats and being violent are already "out on their own". I don't think they'll suddenly decide to start listening to people.

  • People have their own minds and are acting of their own accord. Just because it's the rep's asking them to stop will have no impact on the way they feel.

  • The words of Congress won't change the minds of those want to be disruptive. Just as it wouldn't for those who choose violence in matters of gay rights, anti-war, education, etc... If these extremist few wants to be violent, just as all other extremists, they will find an outlet. Despite the words of Congress... It has been that way since before Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground.
