Why do kids get sad when mom steps outside and "don't care" when dad leaves?

I get all full of guilt when I see my toddler crying in my way out. And I get all confuse seeing my dh acting nonchalant when he has to go out for work while the kids happily wave him bye.

  • It's not necessarily that he doesn't spend enough time with him, but they might just be more used to him having to leave. If he leaves every morning, it becomes habit for the kids to see him go. Even if you leave your kids fairly often for whatever reason, it's not a normal scheduled thing.

  • My boys, 2 and 3, could care less when I leave. They cry when dh leaves. I figure they don't care when I leave because I am with them all day, pretty much every day. If I do leave them during the day it is with my mil who they absolutely adore so they are more excited to see her anyway than worrying about me leaving. DH on the other hand, works all day and some Saturdays. When he is home the boys do not leave his side. They are in the garage working with him, working in the yard, or just playing. I think since they don't see him as often, but adore him, I have to deal with tears if he leaves for a job when they are awake. My dd on the other hand, 7 months, doesn't like me leaving her. DH told me that I finally have one that likes me best! lol
