  • Maybe this is the only life she lived and that is all she knows and does not know how to react to things but to be scared.

  • The only thing to do is tons and tons of leadership training. When she feels like the humans are in total control of every situation she will finally be able to let her guard down.

Dogs really like a spot in the bottom of the pack. Especially rescue dogs. They know the pack leader will protect them from everything-- like the broom, the leash, the noise outside. Over time, they become desensitized to the frightening world.

  • It sounds like she was not socialized. When you find things that scare her don't make a big deal about it but make them apart of her daily life. She needs to be desensitized to those things. I have a dog that we adopted when she was 7 months old and as soon as she started showing fears I got her out in public and began her socialization. I would put your dog on a leash and walk her back and forth with food in front of her face by the broom until she is comfortable with it. Whenever, she shows signs that she is afraid, ignore it and don't pet her because that will actually encourage the behavior you don't want.
