Catholics thought of Caesar as the Lord? Blow my mind when did this happen?

I would like actual credible sources and cross references here please.

"Catholics are the ones that persecuted these early believers because the refused to acknowledge Caesar as Lord. "

read it in another question, just wanted an explanation with sources. I have never heard this.

I apologize if the question offends you. I really wanted to know where this idea came from. I am a cradle Catholic, and I studied religion intensely in high school and college. this is new information to me.
