Allergy meds while breastfeeding

Is it ok to take Claritin or Zyrtec while breastfeeding?

  • Zyrtec is a yes. Not sure about Claratin.

  • Yes to both.  Claritin (loratadine) is recommended over Zyrtec (cetirizine) as it does not have the sedative affect Zyrtec can.  I have taken both Zyrtec and a stronger form of Zyrtec before while nursing; DD gets drowsy so I try not to take them often.

  • my doc said no clairatin while breastfeeding and so did the pharmacist. dont know about zyrtec tho. just ask the pharmacist

  • Yes. Try to stay away from the "D" versions, though, as they MAY lower supply.
