He won't eat. It's been so long...

My 4 year old son had a stomach bug, so he threw up what he ate on Friday. All he could keep down on Saturday was dry cereal. Yesterday, he tried macaroni and ate half a bowl, but it made him feel sick, so he didn't eat any more. Yesterday, he was feeling a lot better, but would eat ANYTHING. Drank milk and juice, that's it. Same thing today. No food. This can't be good. And I can't FORCE him to eat. I told him he won't feel better if he doesn't eat. But he's really upset. I can tell his tummy still hurts.
We went to the pediatrician today, but..... nothing. Advice?

  • He'll know when he's ready to eat, don't force it. I know youre worried about him, but he'll be fine. Offer him popsicles, jello, icecream stuff like that until he is ready to eat something more hearty. Hope he feels better soon!

  • He may be able to tolerate a slice or two of dry toast (butter or sweet jams, etc. may upset his stomach more), but realize that if his stomach is still hurting, he's probably not going to want to eat solids until it stops hurting completely. Plain chicken broth (no noodles & no veggie or meat chunks) may be more acceptable to him & it will be more nutritious, so you could try offering him that, too. And if all he wants is liquids, give him some Pedialyte to drink or weak sweet tea, because these shouldn't upset his stomach too much, if at all.

    Hope he feels better soon!
