Breastfeeding... Why does he resist it??

Hi Mommies,

I am nursing my 7 week old son, for the past week he latches on good, nurses for a few min, and then starts grunting and kicking (I think he is trying to poop). I try to get him to latch on again, but he resists and then he cries..... after a little while of crying he will try to latch on again and then it starts over again. Ive also noticed that he isnt eating enough because his feedings are shorter due to his behavior and I am constantly engorged. what is going on??? It is so bizzare...

I have given up asking my pediatrician because he will not give me answers, all he does is tell me "its normal, it will pass". I do not like him, but I have Kaiser and im stuck with him until Nov when I can change insurance. What might be causing my baby to resist it and get like that while he is nursing??

  • Sounds like oversupply/overactive let down. Check out Oversupply

Here are a few of the common symptoms:

    • Feedings often seem like battles, with baby nursing fitfully on and off

    • Feedings may be short, lasting only 5 or 10 minutes total

    • Baby may seem to have a "love-hate" relationship with the breast

    • Mother's breasts feel very full most of the time

  • could possibly be gas, do you burp him well in between? Also, try changing sides. My almost 1 year old has this obsession with changing sides every like 3-5 minutes. good luck! and way to hang in there!

  • How often are you feeding? Does your baby take a pacifier?

  • It does sound like overactive letdown. Does your milk come in FAST? If so, you need a position change. The kellymom website alreayd mentioned is a GREAT resource. Aslo drop by the breastfeeding moms group.

To a certain degree your doc is right, though. This isn't all that odd. tend to be the worst advisors on feeding. They get next to no training on it.
