Should mom's who breastfeed be tested for drugs?

This is kind of a spin-off from the question about 'Forumla and having a persciption'.

Do you think mom's who breastfeed should have to registar that they are going to at the hospital when the baby is born, and take a drug test every few weeks? I mean if I "need" my doctor to write a note for me to get formula then that only sounds fair. Plus you never know what some mom is smoking up these days.

Hmm, just a thought ... Nothing personal :)

  • yes and we should completely monitor what they eat to make sure they're optimizing their diet because to not do so is horrible wrong selfish and completely toxic to the child! turnabout's fair play ladies!

  • And they shouldn't be allowed to work outside the home. That is not best for baby.

  • i dont agree with the last two comments yes you should drug test mothers but you cant force them to eat a certain diet thats a little far. but ya drug testing should be a mandatory thing they check every month or two week!

  • absolutely! I know so many women who breastfed and smoked pot! a couple were actually using other drugs as well... does that mean it's still best for baby?!

Answer by Anonymous at 7:14 PM on Apr. 1, 2010

  • How about women who are even thinking about getting pregnant getting tested for drugs?

    Hell. Drug tests for EVERYONE!

Nope. It's ALL silly. No scrips for formula. No drug tests. NONE OF IT.

Answer by gdiamante at 7:15 PM on Apr. 1, 2010

  • All that said...I'd be HAPPY to do the tests if you'd like.

Answer by gdiamante at 7:15 PM on Apr. 1, 2010

  • Yes. The anti formula people think formula is poison, but a lot of mommies have stuff in their breast milk that is a lot worse for a baby than nutritional formula.

Answer by Anonymous at 7:29 PM on Apr. 1, 2010

  • Like the women who smart enough to breastfeed are stupid enough to use drugs. The women who care enough about their child's future are to breastfeed care so little about the baby's present to use drugs. The women that are so unselfish to breastfeed are selfish enough to use drugs when they have a baby to care for.

As long as breastfeeding rates are so low there is no need for testing.
