  • In my state it means there is a fireman on his/her way to a fire. I have no idea what it means where you are.

  • Someone who feels she's in danger gets to the pole and pushes an alarm button, and the police are alerted to GET THERE on the double.

If someone feels a potential mugger is tailing her, etc.

They have these on college campuses, and it is part of the college's orientation tour that they explain the purpose and use of these safety poles.

  • Around here, they are usually telephones to contact emergency services. They are still few and far between, and I've never seen one in a park, just on the side of the highway.

  • In New Orleans they had them on Highways to get help if an accident occurred or you broke down. They had a couple on campus at OSU but they were always being damaged.
