Constipation

My son is almost 9 months and has been eating jar food and cereal since 6 months (so there hasn't been any change to his diet) and he's been getting some juice every day. Lately, he's been constipated, but every once in awhile throughout the day he'll start to push and starts screaming because it hurts him so much. There have been a few occasion where I open his diaper while he's screaming and he's got some poop he's trying to push out but needs help. And its hard and small (like little pebbles). Any ideas what to do to help with this? He goes for his 9 month check up soon so I just need something I can do until we see his dr. Thanks!

  • Prunes, mix his cereal with juice, add more veggies into his diet. Even though he hasn't changed his diet, his body is still changing and what once digested easily can change. push more water as well

  • I gave my son light karo syrup in his bottles and that would help with his constipation. Or prune juice in the bottle or even feed him prunes.

  • give him some warm prunes. when you see him pushing again, lay him down, take off his diaper and hold his legsin the squatting position. this may help it come out. but the warm prunes should def work. make sure to incorporate peaches, pears, peas, and prunes in his diet. good luck.

  • Gerber makes prunes in the Stage 1 foods. They work very well.

  • Less cereal (all of the added iron in it is constipating) and more prunes! Whenever my 9 month old gets a little constipated I give her a jar of prunes and she gets back on track.

  • NEVER USE KARO!!!! Karo is a botulism risk and botulism in infants can be deadly.

Gerber makes stage one prunes & prune apple juice. I would try either one and see if that helps any. Also remember that formula / breastmilk should be given before table foods and that should also help relieve constipation as well.
