My baby hit her head. How long until it's safe for her to sleep?

my 4 1/2 month old decided to learn how to roll over. Unfortunately, she was on the couch. She rolled off and hit her head on the hardwood floor. it was about 1 1/2 foot drop. she cried for about 20 minutes or so, but she seems fine now. how long should I wait for her to go to sleep? Because it's about her naptime.

  • The only thing they will do in the er is put her in observation. If she isn't projectile vomiting or acting strange and you can't see anything else wrong with her, then don't let her sleep for 1 hour then if she's sleepy, let her sleep for 30 minutes and then wake her back up. she is probably crying because it scared her and also from your reations.

  • you need to take that baby to the ER!

  • It is ok to let her sleep. Make sure her eyes are not unequally dilated and that she is acting normal. Those are the things you would look for if she had a bad head injury.
Babies have hard heads and are not very likely to get a severe injury from a minor bump.

  • :) Mine did the same thing when she was little! Perfectly fine and one day PLOP off she went! But she also hit her head on the coffee table on the way down.... As long as she's acting normal and isn't vomiting, I would do like jademom07 said and wait an hour and let her take a shorter nap! She might get a little bruise on her head but as long as she's acting normal she'll be ok! I know it's scary and always sad from mommy's side but these things happen!

  • she can go to sleep, there is no time to have to wait - that is an old first aid thing and is no longer recommended- ( the idea being a person can go into shock, and if they are asleep you are less likely to see the signs). As sleepingbeautie said look at her eyes, but ortherwise she'll be fine. You can go in and check on her, as long as her colour and breathing is normal, there is nothing to worry about. If she is sweaty and clammy, not breathing properly or convulsing then go to the ER. Babies skulls are tough and a small drop like that won't have damaged her, except perhaps for a headache

  • It's perfectly fine for her to sleep, for as long as she wants. Check her head for a bump, make sure if there is one it is swollen out and not sunken. As long as she is acting fine and not vomiting let the baby get her rest. You can check her while she is sleeping by touching her hands or toes lightly and make sure she is giving you a reaction like jerking a little or pulling away.
