Can you file bankruptcy in a different State than the one that you reside in?

I have neighbors who filed in another State so they could keep more of their assets. They do own land in the State in which they filed, but they don't live there. Just wondering if this is legal?

  • I'm not completely certain. When we files ours we had to prove residency, but perhaps with owning property in another state that helped them to prove residency in that state?
