Will protein shakes make you more muscular?

I workout 4-5 times a week with 30 min. cardio & weights most days. My husbund drinks them and I have started rinking one a day in the morning because they are quite tasty. Will all the protein make me bulk up? I don't want to get muscular or bulky looking. I want to stay lean & toned!

  • no they wont make you bulk up unless your a man, or your training every day lifting 150 pounds of weight like those weight lifting women. on a women, who works out like you do, protein will build lean muscle, which also eats fat.

  • I drink one protien drink a day and eat greek yogurt. I rarely eat meat so that is how I get my protien. You will not get big and bulky from it.

  • No. I'm like FL2AK and I don't eat much meat or fish (I'm not a vegetarian...just not big on the taste). So I drink a smoothie w/ some protein powder in it to help make sure I get enough protein. I also do Shakeology which helps as well. No bulk here :)

  • It is very rare that any average person who is just exercising (as opposed to an elite athlete, or a professional athlete) needs SO much protein that they need special drinks or powders or supplements. As others have said, you are likely peeing most of the protein out. You only need 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight (assuming you are normal weight). 3 oz of mean/fish/chicken has about 28 gms of protein. 1 egg, 7 grams. 1 Cup of milk or yogurt, 8 grams protein. 1/2 cup legumes/beans, about 8 gms protein. 1 cup of average cereal, 2 grams protein. Kashi type cereal has more like 7 or more grams. SO you get the idea. There is more than enough protein available through regular WHOLE foods. Save your money. Skip the protein shakes.
