A question about Jesus...

This may sound ignorant but I'm seriously wondering...How come all the pictures of Jesus that I see are of him as a white guy?
Shouldn't he be Israeli?

  • How come all the pictures of Jesus that I see are of him as a white guy?
That's probably a result of the European art during the renaissance era.

  • anon, you're ignorant. you don't have to believe Jesus was the messiah or God's son, but to say he never was is far off. there is much proof that he existed outside of the bible. in fact there is more physical proof that he was an actual man than the existence of the Romans. we are taught that in history class

  • "yes, Jesus looked like a terrorist, lol. but really, he wasn't white"

    Speaking of ignorant.
Not all Israeli people are terrorists. That is a horrible and racist thing to say.

As far as why Jesus is mainly portrayed as a white man...I have no idea.

  • Because until this last century, the vast majority of people and churches buying the artwork were rich and white. They did not want images of Jesus shown as an 'inferior" race. Adding to that was the prejucdices against Jews in Europe. The white image of Jesus and Mary have been portrayed for centuries, and it's hard ot break that tradition.

  • It was a move on the part of the various religious groups to make Jesus more "relatable". His appearance also varies by area. For example: in Ireland, both Jesus and Mary look like they were born in Ireland-reddish hair, blur eyes, fair skin, but in the posters in the Midwest and that the churches where I live have used since the fifties, Jesus and Mary have mousy brown or blond hair, brown eyes and slightly darker skin. In Hispanic depictions Jesus and Mary have dark brown or black hair, brown or black eyes, and darker tan skin.
