Plane Crash

A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.

Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.

They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.

The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).

"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.

Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also said to have been on board.

  • I don't know, was it an accident or was there "foul play"? I suppose it's too early to know much for sure.

  • Former Polish president Lech Walesa~ "The Soviets killed Polish elites in Katyn 70 years ago. Today, the Polish elite died there while getting ready to pay homage to the Poles killed there,"

    Sad and Tragic.

  • They included Aleksander Szczyglo, the head of the National Security Office; Jerzy Szmajdzinski, the deputy parliament speaker; Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister; and Gen. Franciszek Gagor, the army chief of staff, according to the party. The party also said that Slawomir Skrzypek, head of the National Bank of Poland, was killed.

"The entire top military brass, including the chief of defense and all the services, were on the plane," said Tomas Valasek, of the Center for European Reform.

"If that is true, then you're looking at a situation, in effect, of the decapitation of the military services."

  • Why the heck were they all on the same plane? Many important people in the Polish government died in the crash. Isn't there a policy with our government that they aren't all allowed to travel that way? Like if Obama, Biden, Sec Clinton, Sec Gates all headed the same place they'd go seperately to avoid this type of thing happening.(Oh my. If my memory serves without all those people we'd have President Pelosi.) What a tragedy and likely a scary time for Poland.
