Tea Party Militia?

OKLAHOMA CITY — Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.

Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.

"Is it scary? It sure is," said tea party leader Al Gerhart of Oklahoma City, who heads an umbrella group of tea party factions called the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance. "But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?"

  • Thus far, the discussions have been exploratory. Even the proponents say they don't know how an armed force would be organized nor how a state-based militia could block federal mandates. Critics also asserted that the force could inflame extremism, and that the National Guard already provides for the state's military needs.

"Have they heard of the Oklahoma City bombing?" said Joseph Thai, a constitutional law professor at the University of Oklahoma. The state observes the 15th anniversary of the anti-government attack on Monday. Such actions could "throw fuel in the fire of radicals," he said.

  • What's the problem? The Second Amendment provides the right for this..."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

If this scares you I would suggest a couple of rolls of Heavy Duty Reynold's Wrap... Beyond this I would take it with a grain of salt considering the Huffpo source.

  • National Guard already provides for the state's military needs

This is not always true. The state guards are on ACTIVE DUTY on many fronts and their resources can be stretched very thin. Besides, it takes a Governor's request and presidential activation to put them in place. That takes time. Communities should be able to defend themselves if necessary. Look at what is happening along the US/Mexico border, particularly in Texas. If the violence spills across the border the guard would arrive too late. In this day and age we have to look at the possiblity of terrorists anywhere and anytime.

  • Saw this in the comments sections after this article. I agree with this poster!

These people love to accuse Obama of using Nazi tactics. And yet they're the ones whose behavior is not unlike that of the SA. SA. Look it up, "ya'll." Hitler and Roem's bully boys who systematically intimidated and ultimately destroyed political opposition under the Weimer Republic. Of course...who needs facts? Far easier to just shout SOCIALISM! Ain't that right, ya'll?

  • Oh brother anonymous do you want to get into how our presidents staunch supporters are consistently trying to shout down the opposition with many falsities and broad ass generalization? This has been being done since before he got elected! Read Alinskys rules for radicals and learn.
