Natural Diasters ...not so natural?

Earthquake in China, cyclone in India, volcanic eruption in Iceland, all in very close time frame. What do you think? Are we just more aware of this stuff now since Haiti? Or do you think there is more going on than we realize?

  • There's more going on, it's obvious.

  • I think it's a cycle that the earth is going through. People tend to think that what happens in their own lifetime is the be-all, end-all, but we're talking about a relatively small window of time. Also, you have to think about the fact that before there were satellites, tvs, telephones, etc, we had no way of knowing what went on across the world. People were only aware of what went on in their own area. For all anyone knew back then, there could've been 33 earthquakes a day in Australia.

  • DusterMommy has a point - a long long time ago we probably didn't hear much news - but in most recent years they at lease had black and white tv's and newspapers and i'm sure they got some kind of world news...
I do think there has been a lot of activity lately in relation to this past century. So it's a bit strange to see so much worldly disaster - USA could be next...

  • Nah, it's Sarah Palin's fault. She has world domination and controls everything.

  • It does seem like the earth is being more active right now, but the earth goes through cycles. I found this site that has great theories on why it seems like there are more and more natural disasters recently. To sum it up, here are the things they talked about:

Some disasters are no more frequent nor severe than before but appear that way because they receive more news coverage
The reason there appears to be more earthquakes is because there are more stations set up to monitor earthquakes and because we are now able to quickly receive news from all over the world.

Some natural disasters are no more frequent nor severe than before, but cause far more damage due to population growth and urban migration, thereby making them SEEM worse.

Some natural disasters are more frequent and more severe than ever before due to environmental degradation and climate change
Deforestation, over grazing, river channelization, CONT

  • hardscaping (covering large swaths of landscape with asphalt and concrete), and many other activities impact the frequency and severity of natural disasters. Deforestation or overgrazing on hillsides increases the probability of landslides after heavy rains. Deforestation and overgrazing in marginal lands can lead to dustbowls or desertification. Straightening and channelizing rivers decreases the total volume of water a river can hold and speeds the flow of the water. Hardscaping large areas decreases the amount of land available to absorb and slow the flow of water. Both of these factors lead to increased flooding.

Those things above explain pretty much what I see going on to a T! So no, I don't think it's necessarily an "increase" in activity, or anything going on like the end of the world or whatever, it's just a cycle.
