Breastfeeding and St. John's Wort?

Anyone know if it is safe to take while breastfeeding? I googled it and I am even more confused now.

I know, I know "ask my doctor". I will, but I am yet to come acrossed a Dr who actually knows anything about breastfeeding. Maybe it is the area I am in, or my health insurance, or just bad luck.

  • That was one of the herbs that LaLeche League had on their "no-no" list when I was breastfeeding my children many years ago. I assume that it still is.

I'd avoid it if i were you. Just because it's 'herbal', doesn't mean it's safe. It's a drug, like any other.
It interferes with birth control along with several other drugs.

Can contribute to lethargy, colic, and drowsiness on infants when BF by mothers using it.
