Christians, how many of you assign a gender, age or other human characteristics to God?

I always thought of God as neither male nor female and outside the real of time and age.

  • Well he is our father, so why wouldn't he be a HE:?

  • Yes, I can see how we might use human words to describe him, but do you think God is a human male?

  • I think most people would agree that you have to be a lunatic to be certain of Poseidon, for instance. If someone was going to run a political campaign and as part of their stump speech they said these hurricanes in the Gulf have become an increasing concern, and we have to start praying to Poseidon, the god who deals with the ocean. This is a manifestly crazy thing to say. Everyone would recoil, it would be the end of that person’s political career!

So what I don't get why do people still go with the whole god bit? He's just as likely or possible as Poseidon.

  • anon, sweetie, thank you for your response but did you go in the wrong post? This is about Christians who give God a gender or other human characteristics. Not about Poseidon that you don't get?

  • His son was a human male... so partly yes, God has male and female characteristics... Holy Spirit is more feminine where God is seen as more masculine. In order to make male and female He had to know something about them .
I look to God as a Father and Holy Spirit a mother like but not a mother.. just the characteristics, Holy Spirit is nurturing, a comforter, teacher, encourager. Yet all in all there is no male nor female but charecteristic like there have those qualities.

  • God is neither male nor female. He goes by HE for several reasons. One, being Headship, for reason of order. (For God is not the author of chaos, but of order...) Second, because He wants to have a relationship with us, and we, as humans, have a hard time having an emotional relationship with an "It". God is Spirit, which means He has no gender, but assigns Himself one for You and Me, because He loves us....and wants us to love Him back. Thirdly, we often feel a "Father Figure" is strong, commanding, and protective. God wants us to see those characteristics in HIm. And a Father's wrath is something to be feared. He wants us to see this, too. I hope this helps end some confusion.
