Does anyone know if the bottom of a crock pot heats up?

I bought a crock pot from a garage sale today. It's a Crockery Kettle. It appears to be an older model. I believe I read it was made for Kmart by Rival. Anyway, I plugged it in to test it. It appears to heat up on the sides, but not the bottom. Then I got to wondering, is this the way they actually work? I never really felt the bottom before. Anyone know?

  • I would assume it does. My crockpot has a removable stoneware piece, and all sides and the bottom of it is warm when I lift it out.
