Why sing "rock a bye baby"?

Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull a baby to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle on the ground?

  • Because despite the songs lyrics it is better than Jingle Bells which is my fall back song when I can not think of anything else.

  • I change the words. For the last line, I sing "mama will catch you, cradle and all"
