Blackmail by the GOP?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Monday's unveiling of a compromise Senate climate bill was postponed on Saturday, Democratic Senator John Kerry said, after a dispute arose over unrelated immigration reform legislation.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said earlier on Saturday he would have to pull out of the bipartisan climate change effort because of concerns Democrats would push forward with a debate on immigration reform, rather than the climate change bill, in the Senate.

Kerry said he hoped to keep working for passage of a climate bill.

  • Blackmail? Huh? sounds like politics as usual. Did you not see the winking and handshaking that bought votes in for the Health Care reform? this is what politicians do. They demand something they want in turn for a vote - or they with hold a vote or line-item in order to get something else they want.

  • They are ALL playing GAMES with our future..... AS we have learned just over the last few months. If Dems want it bad enough, they will find a way to make it happen. Back room sweet deals, bribes, coercion.. Whatever it takes... The unofficial slogan of the Obama administration (from the words of one of the admin, himself) NEVER let a good crisis go to waste..

  • To paraphrase that joke going around, "Dear Bob, Lindsey Graham is my favorite republican senator....."

  • Blackmail!!!!!!!?????????? Where is the blackmail - exactly???? What did Graham threaten to let out if Kerry didn't do what he wanted??? Did you question the strong-arm tactics by the dems over the health care bill with all the calling to the WH, the closed door discussions, the rides on AF1, the bribery, and everything that went on? Graham decides to walk away because the immigration is going to be yet another rush through the Congress bill which is something that should be done contemplatively.

Blackmail - 2 a : extortion or coercion by threats especially of public exposure or criminal prosecution b : the payment that is extorted (Webster online dictionary)    So, how does this word fit Sen Graham's withdrawal from the bill?

  • Actually it's the Dems who want to go onto the Immigration bill because they feel they can make more "political hay" with it. The Dems said they wanted to do climate next and then changed their mind midway when things got heated with this Arizona immigration bill.
There is no blackmail here. The Dems will cram through whatever they think they can anyway. I think the Republicans should just say NO to everything because everything the Dems want to enact is bad for America. I say put a hold on government till next year and we will all be better off.

  • 100% blackmail. Same as the health care votes that were coerced for OTHER things..How is this ANY different? Holding up ONE bill about something entirely different

  • Where do you see blackmail here? Between financial reform, immigration reform, and climate change I wonder which one will get done first.....I also wonder WHEN they will look to job creation, you know, that problem that was supposed to be the first priority of Congress...Oh, and don't forget all the fixes necessary to make the health care bill do what they said it was going to do. There is no blackmail here. Just business (politics) as usual.
