Pell Grants.. Ever Get One Through Unemployment?

My husband was laid off 6 weeks ago, and getting UEI benefits. Today, we got a letter from our local work force agency saying he may be eligible for a Pell Grant up to $5,350.00, to pay for job training or education. He is very interested in this, since his occupation is currently not hiring in our area. We've talked about it and decided what he'll train for if he is accepted, but I want to know if anyone else has done this and how it worked out. What is the process like from beginning to end? He's already been to the sites they told him about in the letter, but we're looking for people with personal experience in this. Thanks.

  • He would have to hurry up and fill out his fafsa for the 2010-2011 school year at fafsa.gov (NOT fafsa.com which is a scam site) and enroll in college full time (for the full amount, half time cuts the amt. in half)

  • He would have to hurry up- and it's first come first serve. When the money is gone it's just gone. He doesn't have to pay it back as long as he is getting good grades and making progress towards a degree or certification.

One of the problems is they will look at last years income to see if he is eligible. I think that you can show them that he is unemployed and then they'll look at this year's income- especially if there is a significant difference. Just food for thought.

Also be leery of student debt. The last thing you want is for him to finish school, still be unemployed, and then your family has piles and piles of student loans.

GOOD LUCK getting it all sorted out. :)
