I was wondering if there are Natural Born Americans that have an accent?

A couple of weeks ago I met a military brat that was Hispanic but was born in USA. English wasn't her first language. How common is to find Natural Born Americans with an accent?

  • Very common. If the parent's don't speak English how would their USA born children learn it before they start school? One of my best friends was born in Michigan but didn't speak English until she was almost 5 and ready to start kindergarten. Her parent's (though they knew English themselves) didn't have a reason to teach it to her before then.

  • I am one, there are regional accents from everywhere. Also, there are hispanics that have accents because they speak spanish as well as english and this has nothing to do with where they are from.

  • oh yes! my Texan parents didnt fair too hot when we lived in Massachusetts...you would think they were speaking a totally different language the way ppl stared at them haha.

and like mhaney said Cajuns practically speak their own language...my MIL calls it Frenglish (French & English). most Americans would think a Cajun was foreign cause their accents are so heavy.
