  • Yes, most women can safely ingest the three main types of artificial sweeteners used in the United States: aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal), sucralose (Splenda), and saccharin (Sweet’NLow). These sugar substitutes are used in many different types of food and drink.

Here are a few facts and cautions to keep in mind:

Aspartame is composed of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. It has not been shown to cause birth defects, and although some members of the public and a few scientists have raised concerns about its safety, most physicians and scientists say it's safe when used in moderation during pregnancy.

  • I stay away from it on general principle. Try agave nectar if you are avoiding refined sugar.

  • It's not good to drink that when you are NOT pregnant so I'd say no to doing it while pregnant
