Anyone know about exotic tropical fruit?

Our neighbor has a fruit tree with some unusual fruit. It looks like a mini artichoke. It's light green and has pointy things on it like a artichoke but not quite, like maybe a cactus but not sharp. There's another tree next to it it's a lychee fruit tree, lychee is from japan.Wondering if I get one, should i taste it or eat it?

  • Could it be a buckeye tree? Not fruit, don't eat it. What is inside? Buckeye trees have ball like "fruit" incased in green spiky shell. Very weird.
