5 month old question

my 5month old ds has had 4 episodes of crying really hard (got upset) and then starts with this strange thing. he gasps, grimaces and has a short breath holding spell. it is so hard to explain. first time was when he started crying while in his car seat and i did not get him out fast enough, 2nd time was my 2 year old tried 2 pick him up and he fell and bumped his head (no bumps, bruises, etc. just startled/scared him and i am sure it did hurt). The bad thing is that it goes on periodically for several hours after the episode of him getting upset. it is like his body is so upset that he can't calm down from it. he is not crying later, just still so keyed up it seems. and even when he goes to sleep after it happens, he will do it in his sleep. anyone ever had this experience or similar?-any advice/info?

  • Call your doc; this doesn't sound like normal behavior for the age at all.

  • Sounds somewhat like startle reflex.

It's possible for them to startle repeatedly and startle in their sleep, but this also sounds a bit abnormal. Sounds a little like tics.

I'd think taking your baby to your doctor would be good, but they will likely just brush you off as a nervous new mother. Take a video the next time this happens. Keep a cell phone with video or your cam corder around and record him the next time this happens. If the doctor sees it and goes "AHA!" or "This is just startle" then you will know what is going on.
