breastfed 4 month old

How often should a 4 month old nurse? I understand the nurse on demand concept, just looking for a general guideline here.

  • It really is hard to say, as each child is different. At 4 mos, on demand is probably somewhere between every 2 hrs and every 4 hrs, but like I said, they're all different.

  • As often as they want. There is no correct number of nursing sessions, only a correct number of diaper changes. About 4-5 really wet dipes a day at this point.

"As often as they want" is a permanent answer, even when solids come into the picture. (And those follow nursing, btw.)

  • my 8 month old use to nurse at least every 1.5 to 2 hrs, but some days less just depends

  • According to La Leche League's Breastfeeding Answer Book, 3rd edition, on average most breastfed babies take between 2-4 ounces about 8-12 times per day, consuming about 28-32 ounces total per day.
