Good car seats for 3 year olds?

Need to know what is the best car seat to get our 3 year olds when they hit the 40lb mark that exceeds their carseats now....one of our sons will be 3 may 23 the other will be 4 sept 6. Any ideas and pros and cons to the seats would be AWESOME! thanks in advance!!
BTW we dont want to get too pricey like going to by some crazy contraption that does everything under the sun. Safety is all we are going for....

  • The reason why I said the Graco Nautilus is because you can/should use it with the 5pt. harness now, until they outgrow it or are at least 6yrs. old. Then you can use it as a highback booster until they outgrow that, and then use it as a backless booster until they pass the 5 step test and need only the seatbelt. The Nautilus doesn't expire for 9 years and your kids will get lots of use out of it.
I understand not being able to afford that much at one time, I would buy 1 now for whichever child is closest to 40lbs. and then you can buy the other one later on.

Do NOT get this: Cosco - Traveler Belt Positioning Booster Car Seat

Remember, 4yrs. old and at least 40lbs. is the bare minimum for moving to a booster seat. It is better to wait though, because they also need to be mature enough to sit properly all the time. If/when you are looking for an inexpensive, but yet good booster check out the Graco Turbobooster.

  • I've just been investigating this because my daughter's about to outgrow her car seat. There are a bunch of high-back booster seats (some convert into a backless for older children) that have a 5-point harness that can be used on younger kids (the range from @20lbs to @60, depending on the seat model), then later, the seat belt can be used with older kids (30+ lbs, or, I saw it defined by a writer as "old enough not to play with the seatbelt and move it out of place") There are a bunch in the 50-80 dollar range. Try looking at Target, Walmart etc.

  • Your best bet is probably going to be the Graco Nautilus.
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Graco-Nautilus-3in1-Car-Bravo/8112222

It harnesses to 65lbs. and then becomes a booster.

  • whew.... i just looked up that car seat sarah. i dont really think that at this stage its sensible for us to spend $298 on car seats at our kids age. woulda been cool if they had had those when they were born but here we've already bought 4 car seats at this point two infant and two of the next size. like i said we dont really have the means to just go spend $300---if i knew i would definatley use it again soon i would but I doubt it.

  • OP- you get what you pay for. Most kids aren't ready for a belt-positioning booster at 4. If they play with the seat belt at all, it is not safe. You would be better off with a harnessing car seat that converts to a booster. Keep in mind that most kids will be in a booster until they are 8 or 10 years old.

We use Britax Frontiers, but those are double the cost of the Nautilus.

If you buy a nice, harness to booster seat, it will be the last seat that you need to buy for your children and they will be safe. You can get a Nautilus for 130-150. They are safe and will last your child until they are done with car seats.
