Do animals get gray hair as they age?

I know, I feel stupid asking. lol But I've never seen a dog get gray hair but my dog's hair now is getting a lot lighter. She is a rescue so we only have an estimate on her age of about 3 or 4 years old. But her medium brown fur is now getting very light and almost gray! My kids were asking me about gray hair on her and I had no idea. I thought I'd ask the smart women here.

  • Thanks everyone! I hope this doesn't mean that she is older than the vet estimated. The vet guessed that she was about 4 or so but she's getting really light fur and she seems to be sensitive on her right side.

  • Yepp. I had a 13 year old collie and she got grey on the tips of her ears, around her nose, and under her belly and on her tail. I know golden retrievers get really grey in the face as they get older. I don't think all animals do, but I know dogs do.

  • Yes, they do get grey hair as they age, just like people. They don't necessarily go all grey, but they will have at least some grey hairs as they age.
